Staged Voyeurism was a performance-based series executed in 2008-9 within an empty office space in a Goldman Sachs building in the heart of New York’s financial district. Using the vacant office space as a canvas, I designed a series of interior environments. The performances themselves were not choreographed, rather the subjects were instructed loose actions to follow and were invited to move freely through these constructed spaces for one hour. From my vantage point in a vacant apartment across the street, I photographed and recorded the subjects, creating an inherent tension between the observer and the observed. Staged Voyeurism explores the performative nature of everyday life, the act of observing, and the power dynamics at play in a society increasingly defined by systems of control and surveillance.
